Students' learning about concepts in a course involving Integral Calculus presents
worrisome difficulty rates, as there is a significant number of failures and withdrawals
in disciplines involving this theme. To investigate the practice and development of
students from the Mathematics Teaching program at IFRN/Campus Ceará-Mirim in
Integral Calculus procedures, we proposed studying the technique of integrating rational
functions by partial fractions and analyzing the students' proficiency with this Calculus
tool. Accordingly, we suggest for this research, as a didactic strategy for teaching and
learning this integration technique, the active methodology of Team-Based Learning,
which was applied in two instances to mathematics students who were attending or had
completed the Calculus B course (4th period) of the night shift at IFRN Ceará-Mirim.
With the application of this methodology, we conducted a test for the students divided
into study groups and, after that, administered two investigative questionnaires, one for
the students and another for the mathematics teachers teaching in the Bachelor of
Mathematics program at the Campus. These implementations yielded results that were
discussed throughout the research. It was noted that the students participated more
actively in their learning when subjected to a methodology that encouraged them to
dialogue and compare ideas about the studied subject while under the teacher's guidance
in the classroom, with feedback on the errors made in the question-solving processes.
