Mathematics is present and guides the lives of all, regardless of their social performances. In this way, their presence in educational environments is indispensable, as well as in the processes of entry that contain basic contents of the life of individuals. The main objective is to relate the math notes of students' admission to the Environmental Control technical course, through the selection exam, with their maths notes in the first year of the course, in the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte, Central Natal Campus. Among the methodological procedures was the use of the qualitative and quantitative study, based on documentary analysis provided by the Sistema Gestor de Concursos (SGC) and Sistema Unificado de Administração Pública (SUAP) which provided, respectively, the entrance and first year grades in the course. The results showed that the non-quota students, in general, are able to remain in the institution with good academic results, different from the students that present varying behaviors, from significant performance of admission and permanence to the effective of the disapprovals in the class analyzed. It was observed the importance of the quota policy for a fairer and egalitarian process of teaching, allowing the opportunity of those who, despite certain difficulties, whether social and / or academic, have access to quality public institutions of education, such as the others originated the private network.
