In this paper, mandatory requirement to complete the Degree in Physics IFRN, Campus Natal Central, bring a discussion of the importance of updating the high school science curriculum, in terms of modern and contemporary physics and more specifically the radiation physics. Thus, we present data from a survey conducted in the state of Rio Grande do Norte about the population's knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology involved in ionizing radiation, even though that content that should be addressed in formal education. Throughout the article, also will discuss topics of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the production of X-rays, as well as about the harmful effects on human health caused by overexposure and / or unprotected to ionizing radiation, such as, the biological effects of radiation and the relevance of radiological protection.
