Teaching English to Youth and Adult Education students – EJA – still constitutes a major challenge for teachers in Brazil. Based on this question, the present paper is then established, with the objective of knowing the profile of these teachers and their perceptions in relation to working with the English language in the EJA modality. Having as the locus of investigation the schools of the State Education Network of Rio Grande do Norte existing in the municipality of Canguaretama/RN, the research focused on professionals working only in EJA high school classes and included the application of an online questionnaire, composed of closed questions which was forwarded to participants through the EJA sector existing in the 2nd Regional Education Directorate – DIREC. In this proposition, the paper was constituted in the light of authors such as Freire (1996), Libâneo (2004), Vygotsky (2007), Kramsch (2017), among others with productions focused on the context of EJA and teaching practice. The results achieved revealed that the teachers participating in the research present a significant level of training distance, whether initial or continued, in working with the English language, which can be reflected as an obstacle to achieving more significant results in working with the English language. discipline at EJA. Furthermore, with regard to the perception of these professionals regarding the relationship between EJA students and the aforementioned language, issues of insecurity, low interest and learning2 difficulties stand out, in particular due to the lack of real perspectives for using the language.
