Resumo
The subgrade, the pavement foundation layer, plays a fundamental role in supporting traffic loads and is crucial to the durability and structural performance of the road. Taking this importance into account, the aim of this study was to investigate the subgrade resistance of a soil in the city of Rio do Fogo/RN, in the Praia de Zumbi district, aiming at its viability for application in paving projects. For this study, three soil samples were collected and subjected to physical characterization, compaction and California Support Index (CBR) tests, following the ABNT technical standards. The samples were classified according to the SUCS and TRB systems and were composed mainly of sand, also containing varying levels of silt and gravel. The results showed that Sample 1 presented the best geotechnical performance, with a CBR of 13.04%, being suitable for use as a subgrade. In turn, Samples 2 and 3 also met the necessary requirements according to the DNIT guidelines. None of the samples showed significant expansion. At the end of the work, it can be concluded that the soils of the region can be used in road works, as long as they are well compacted and, if necessary, stabilized. It is worth highlighting that this study contributes to the technical and sustainable development of the local infrastructure.
