This dissertation aims to understand how professional education was configured in Rio Grande do Norte between 1908 and 1957. And as specific objectives: to map the deliberations for the professional education in the regiments, laws and decrees of the RN; Identify state actions related to vocational education; Mapping the professional schools, considering the social and historical context that were created. In this sense, the following questions emerged: How is professional education mentioned in the legislations of the RN from 1908 to 1957? What are the types of actions of the NB in relation to vocational education in the period? How were professional schools organized by the RN State? What are the state's interests in implementing vocational schools? Were there disparities between the capital and the other municipalities of the RN? For this purpose, the methodology of documentary analysis was used by mapping the decrees, legislations and messages of the governors of the temporal cut in study, from the perspective of the qualitative approach for data analysis. The mapping carried out also considered the following aspects: the temporal cut, the number of documents and the signs of creation of Professional Schools or courses. Thus, this dissertation is inserted in the field of professional education based on the conception of Silvia Manfrendi, in the dimension of the political history of René Remond (2003), in the understanding of historical research of Rüsen (2010), sources of José d'Assunção Barros 2010), and Arostegui's (2006) documentary analysis, in Ginzburg's (1991) approach to the investigation of evidence of professional teaching in the documents and in the field of the history of professional education. Of the 492 (four hundred and ninety-two) documents analyzed, it was evidenced that the strategies of the State of the RN regarding vocational education were through initiatives such as: the creation of schools, courses and subsidies. Among the actions of the State of the RN were the creations of institutions aimed at professional education, namely: Escola Normal de Natal, School of Music (through reorganization), Escola Normal de Mossoró, Professional School of Alecrim, School of Pharmacy and Dentistry , Worker School, School of Social Work, Faculty of Law, Agricultural School of Jundiaí, Faculty of Medicine, School of Philosophy, Science and Letters of Natal, School of Engineering of Natal. Other initiatives of the RN State concerning vocational education were the creations of courses in agronomy, zootechnics, agricultural surveying, fine arts, industrycommerce, elementary primary (handicrafts, industrial-agricultural apprenticeship). Therefore, the present study intends to contribute to research on the history of education thematic. As well, contribute to new debates for the history of professional education norte-rio-grandense.
