This report presents a study on the factors that motivate students enrolled in Integrated
Technical Courses at the Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), Campus
Canguaretama, to participate in scientific events within the school environment, having the V
Mostra Técnica (V MTec), held in 2024 from November 5 to 7, as its context. The research was
based on a questionnaire answered by 74 students from integrated technical courses and on
documentary data recorded in the Sistema Unificado de Administração Pública (SUAP), such
as the number of participants in the event. The analysis of the responses showed that, although
students declared interest in participating in technical-scientific events, participation in the V
MTec occurred predominantly due to extrinsic motivations, such as teacher requirements and
graded activities. A significant preference for practical, dynamic, and artistic-cultural activities
was also identified, revealing an incongruence between the students’ declared interests and their
actual choices within the event’s program. The study concludes that student engagement in the
V Mostra Técnica is directly related to the interactive nature of the activities and the fulfillment
of curricular demands, indicating the need to rethink programming strategies. The research
contributes to the improvement of future editions of the Mostra Técnica and opens space for
further studies, as it may present relevant data regarding student motivation at the campus.
