This document presents the development and implementation of an automated irrigation system located at the Praça da Paz entre os Povos (Square of Peace Between Peoples), at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) - Canguaretama. The system was installed and is working in this ethnobotanical garden composed by living plant collections related to Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous traditions, knowledge, and practices. The system is composed by microcontroller, soil moisture sensors and actuators, to monitor environmental conditions such as soil moisture and automatically adjusting irrigation volume and timing. The main objective was to create an efficient, accessible, sustainable system capable of irrigating only when necessary, preventing water waste. Our system can be controlled locally or via mobile apps and cloud-based platforms. These help reduce water waste and ensure the health of the plants.
Additionally, it can be integrated with meteorological data, enabling real-time adjustments, such as suspending irrigation during rain or intensifying it during dry periods. This contributes to sustainability and the rational use of natural resources.
