Due to the lack of basic sanitation infrastructure, urban rivers were used as channels for transporting city sewage. The preservation of these environments has been a topic of constant concern with the focus on appropriate conduct that can minimize the impacts that different types of pollution can cause to the environment. Public authorities, companies and the population are largely responsible for solid waste management, responsible for correctly disposing of the waste they produce, whether at home or in organizations. In this way, the work aimed to analyze the perception of environmental impacts by residents and traders around the Maceió River, in the urban area of Touros/RN, as well as the performance of public managers in relation to local environmental conservation, the situation of bodies of water and possible uses of water in communities. To carry out this research, action research was used, classified in terms of the means applied as exploratory – descriptive, investigating the problem of the Maceió River. The snowball methodology was used as a tool to delimit the research sample, and the data collection instrument was the interview with open and closed questions, dealing with socio-environmental and economic issues, with a qualitative/quantitative approach. . In the scope of classification, the research carried out was of an applied nature. The main results obtained reveal that residents believe that the Maceió River is polluted as a result, among other factors, of inadequate waste disposal and ineffective sanitation. A booklet was developed aimed mainly at residents of the city of Touros/RN and students, so that they can develop new habits in their daily activities, seeking to minimize the great damage caused by human action, with the aim of promoting a change in habits, treatment waste, the formation of conscious citizens, the multiplication of knowledge inside and outside the school environment. It is considered urgent to provoke residents, traders and public managers into a greater interest in conservation and preservation of the Maceió River, encouraging them to improve habits, consumption patterns and lifestyle that help preserve the environment.
