The present work shows the Brazilian scenario about the preservation of scientific
memory available in digital media and the challenges to ensure its integrity, reliability
and perennial access. It aims to map the digital preservation practices that are being
adopted by Brazilian federal universities to safeguard their electronic journals. It also
contextualizes and defines information and memory within the Information Science
(IS) field, emphasizing the social aspects of information and the conceptual overview
about memory on IS. It analyzes the significant changes that have occurred in the
scientific communication process, from the insertion of Information Technology (IT),
thus designing a parallel between the past and the present. It also highlights the
main challenges that involve the issue of digital preservation, and outlines an
overview of the initiatives and projects being developed on the national and global
level. Methodologically, this work is characterized as exploratory, descriptive, and
bibliographical, using the structured questionnaire with semi-open questions for data
collection. In the results, it was verified that the lack of policies, financial, human and
procedural resources are among the main factors that affect the effective
development of the actions of digital preservation. As conclusion, the present work
observes that in the electronic journals field, the digital preservation becomes
extremely necessary in order to guarantee and ensure that scientific production
remains accessible, retrievable and understandable for posterity. The aim of this
mapping provide support to managers and institutions so that they can reassess the
practices that are being adopted to preserve the institutional scientific memory.
