ABSTRACT
The research from which this dissertation originated had as its general objective to analyze news
published in the Potiguar press, aiming to systematize historical readings about education and
professional education in the press of Rio Grande do Norte from 1877-1947. The historical
sources analyzed were five newspapers, the Macao, the Conservative Brado, the Federal Brado,
the Republic and the Order, and a Magazine by the Historical and Geographic Institute of Rio
Grande do Norte, which show how the different educational reforms and the changes were
addressed. of public policies in relation to professional education in the Brazilian Empire and
in the beginning of the first Republic, in the Vargas Era and in the Democratic Republic. In this
context was used as methodological support the indicator method developed by Carlos
Ginzburg as a support for reading the traces of Professional Education found in the sources. In
total270 copies were analyzed between Newspapers and Magazines, of which 28 were used in
this dissertation, 12 magazines and 16 journals. Of these 5, they are from Jornal Macauense, 2
from Jornal a República, 5 from Jornal a Ordem and 4 from Jornal o Brado Conservador. The
sources show evidence of the formation of specific political groups that articulated with the
press of Rio Grande do Norte during the period and determined the conduct of policies for
education through discussions on education characterized as Civic, Intellectual, Moral, People,
Education. Agricultural Professional, Education of the Blind and Youth Education. Finally, this
research made it possible to understand that historical readings and microhistory can be
articulated with the field of knowledge of Vocational Education, especially with the history of
educational public policies. It also showed that the gaps, prior to 1909, about Vocational
Education in Rio Grande do Norte can be filled with new research and that the History of
Vocational Education can be reread in other sources such as photographs.
