This dissertation analyzes the educational practice of teacher Maria de Lourdes Filgueira Guilherme, with emphasis on her participation as a music teacher at the Industrial School of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, between the period of 1945 to 1968. The objective was to study his life story, teacher training and professional performance in Music Teaching, in particular in Choral Singing. To this end, the analyzes are based on the theoretical and methodological construct of Cultural History, particularly on Roger Chartier (1990) and his concepts of practices and representations, but also on other authors in the field of social sciences and historiography, such as Certeau (1982), Foucault (2012), Gatti Júnior (2002), Magalhães (2004), Le Goff (1990). Due to its insertion in the field of the History of Professional Education, it is based on its interlocutors, with whom we dialogue, namely: Ciavatta (2015, 2009), Cunha (2005) and Nascimento (2018), among others. With regard to documentary research, the collections and sources from the Central Archive of the IFRN-Campus Natal Central, Hemeroteca Digital da Biblioteca Nacional, Villa-Lobos Museum, 1st Office of Christmas Notes, Associação Mães Criando Arte, Escola Estadual Lourdes Guilherme, Memorial do Atheneu, State Public Archive of Rio Grande do Norte and the Venerable Brotherhood of Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos. In these spaces were selected: letter, photographs, Jornal A República, Diário de Natal, O Poti, A Ordem, Som Magazine, among other documents. In partial perspectives, it appears that teacher Maria de Lourdes Filgueira Guilherme had training at the Imaculada Conceição School, at the Rio Grande do Norte Institute of Music and at the National Conservatory of Orfeonic Singing (CNCO). Professor of piano and orpheonic singing, she worked in several institutions, among them: Atheneu Norte-Riograndense, Escola Normal de Natal, Escola Doméstica, Instituto de Música do Rio Grande do Norte and Escola Industrial de Natal, in the latter she held a position of trust as coordinator and sometimes replaced the then director Irineu Martins de Lima. Professor Lourdes Guilherme assumed the direction of the Instituto de Música do Rio Grande do Norte (IMRN) in 1952, becoming the first and only woman in the direction of that Institute. In summary, the teacher and conductor had a relevant performance, bequeathing to music and orpheonic singing, in addition to her pioneering spirit and female insertion, contributions to teaching practices in different institutions in the north of Rio Grande do Norte, in which she demonstrated leadership, assertiveness and professionalism.
